SV Werder Bremen have found their successor to Ole Werner. Horst Steffen will be the Green-Whites’ new head coach from next season. The 56-year-old joins Werder from SV Elversberg, as confirmed by Clemens Fritz on Thursday. The two clubs have agreed not to disclose the terms of the deal.

Werder’s pre-season schedule

Werder will begin their preparations for the 2025/26 season at the start of July, with Ole Werner leading the first training session of pre-season on 7th July. The first friendly will take place five days later, away against FC Verden 04. The Green-Whites then play away against Kickers Emden a week later.

SV Werder passed up the chance for a fourth straight Bundesliga away win, instead having to settle for a draw with 1. FC Union Berlin in front of 22,012 fans at the Stadion an der Alten Försterei on matchday 32. Jens Stage netted the brace (2’, 15’) which saw the Green-Whites assume control before Tom Rothe (37’) and Laszlo Benes (84’) brought the Köpenick club back on level terms.

SV Werder emerged victorious from their penultimate friendly of the 2024/25 post-season on Thursday evening. The Green-Whites won 6-4 in front of 2,650 fans at the Burgwall-Stadion, with regular goalkeeper Michael Zetterer operating in an unfamiliar role.

SV Werder began the 2024/25 post-season with a friendly loss away to fourth-division side SV Meppen in front of 5,373 spectators. Lasse Zumdieck (43’), Willi Evseev (80’), Christopher Schepp (85’) and Daniel Haritanov (90’) found the net for the hosts, while U23s player Dominik Kasper scored for the Green-Whites (48’) as the game ended 4-1.
